On-Campus
Main Content
Veterans who choose to enroll in on-campus classes will have access to many academic resources and assistance to help them make the transition into a student. These students will also have access to the beautiful great outdoors both on campus and across the region.
Touch of Nature Environmental Center, part of SIU’s outdoor learning community, provides programming for veterans to help ease the transition to civilian life through outdoor adventure.
Not far from the SIU campus sits Giant City State Park, which has many hiking trails for hikers of all levels. Camping, picnicking, hunting, fishing, rock-climbing, rappelling, horseback riding, as well as lodging and dining are all also offered at Giant City State Park, which is part of the Shawnee National Forest.

Short Term Military Leave Policy
Student veterans should review the Short Term Military Leave Policy in the case they are called for active duty.
Student Veterans Organization
The Student Veterans Organization is an official chapter of Student Veterans of America and is an officially registered student organization through SIU. The RSO offers students an opportunity to engage on campus through meaningful involvement. Getting involved can help veteran students build their resume and network with other veterans and employers.
University Housing
There are many veteran students living on campus. We seek to provide a hassle-free environment and a community to help serve your individual needs. In addition to our residence halls, we offer apartment units to combine independence with the convenience and benefits of on-campus living. We offer individual contracts and there is no penalty for breaking contracts for military obligations.
Off-Campus Housing
We have compiled a list of renters/leasers in the local area to help aid student veterans looking for housing. This is not a complete listing, and the information presented in this guide is for reference only and is not guaranteed. SIU Carbondale is not associated with any of the companies on this guide and does not profit in any way from you choosing to rent/lease from them.
